(please include photographer's name when noted). New Pass, Longboat Key Overlooking New Pass and the cove, rose a partially completed bridge and the Ritz Carlton Hotel, dubbed the "Ghost Hotel." They were both started by John Ringling in 1925 and never completed. The hotel stood as an attractive nuisance until it was demolished in the winter of 1963-64 by Arvida, the firm which purchased most of the southern half of Longboat Key in 1959. New Pass was cut by the hurricane of 1848. William Whitaker, a Sarasota pioneer, rode out the storm and the next morning was reported to have said, "Look, there's a New Pass!"
